Born March 1, 1994 in Strafford, Ontario, Canada, Justin Drew Bieber was raised in a single parent family by his mom, Pattie Mallette. Before becoming a professional musician Bieber and his mother lived in low income housing in Strafford (population 30,000).
Bieber is a largely self-taught musician and plays the guitar, piano, and drums. He has taken lessons for trumpet, and takes vocal lessons. Before he took up music his hobbies included chess and sports. His early musical ability was evident when at the age of 12 he entered his first musical completion and succeeded in coming in second place. Encouraged by this success Bieber spent the next summer busking in front of a Stratford theater, playing cover songs with his open guitar case on the ground in front of him. He earned nearly $3,000 in tips for the season. He used his earnings to take his mother to Disneyland for the first vacation they had ever been on.
With the help and support of his mother, Bieber then began to post videos to YouTube in 2007. Initially these videos were of him performing cover songs by various artists including Usher, Chris Brown, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake and Ne-Yo just for his family and friends to watch. Bieber quickly gained a strong YouTube following and started to write and perform his own songs. His inherent charm, charisma and prenatural musical ability drew the attention of music industry executive Scooter Braun. Braun had been searching for an Usher on YouTube and accidentally clicked on a video of Bieber busking a cover of an Usher song.
Recognizing Bieber’s potential to become a break out star, Scooter Braun tracked Bieber down through clues in his videos. Braun encouraged Bieber to post more songs to YouTube. Braun then arranged for Bieber to meet with several record labels and studios including Justin Timberlake and Usher. Only seven months after first posting his songs to YouTube, the 14 year old musician signed with Usher and Island Def Jam Records in October 2008. Bieber and his mother moved to Atlanta where the Island Records studios are located.
For the next year Justin Bieber started to work in the studio and went on a tour which included playing Madison Square Garden and a performance for President Obama and his family. He released his EP “My World” in November 2009. Four of the singles from the album were made it into the Billboard Top 100, and album itself was number 6 on the chart
